Three qualify for Boston

SCHENECTADY—Five area runners completed the 18th annual Mohawk Hudson River Marathon Oct. 15, including three Cooperstown women whose was good enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon next spring.

Helen Risney, Schatzi Hall and Laura Kilty all finished the 26.2 miles in less than the three hour and 50 minute qualifying time. Hall's time was 3:23:17, Risney 3:27:33 and Kilty just qualified with a time of 3:47:19.

Hall finished fifth overall in the women's race, while Risney was the top finisher in the 40-44 age group.

Risney's time was particularly impressive considering it was her first ever marathon.

"I was very pleased," she said. "I thought I could definitely qualify, and my goal was to finish in less than three hours and 30 minutes. I definitely planning on running the Boston Marathon as well."

Former Milford resident Mike Rutledge finished second overall in the men's race with an impressive time of 2:41:16. Bruce Kramer, Kilty's husband, finished in three hours, 41 minutes and 21 second, good for 161st.
