Letters to the Editor

The two-part series on area development that ran recently in the Crier confirms my ideas about the future of our village and particularly Main Street. The series makes two very important points. First, that future planning for our area should occur on a regional basis rather than by individual towns or villages. I had suggested this before when I talked about our essential services such as banks, drug stores and the post office be outsourced to the surrounding villages and hamlets. To involve all these communities in such a scheme, it is only logical that they be brought in on the planning so that they will not be overwhelmed by the additional traffic and parking. For example, tourists descending on Fly Creek in the summer to use the ATM at the Cider Mill could be debilitating to the people in that community without well thought-out planning. It is therefore essential that we have regional oversight.

The second point pertains to globalization. The series makes a very good argument that we are all symbiotically tied to a global economy. We’re no longer isolated single entities, but rather part of a larger global community. My suggestion of a Babe Ruth Piazza for Main Street fits right in with this concept. With this type of thematic feature, we can attract tourists from throughout the world and especially Italy. Granted they might not be too interested in baseball, but with the proper promotion, we can entice them to come, and when they do, to educate them to appreciate our national pastime. These visitors will feel right at home in our recreation of an Italian piazza. Eventually we can add cobblestones and then horse racing to complete the theme.

Not only will our friendly little village seem right to our guests, but they may get so caught up in the spirit of baseball that they will carry the idea back home. Maybe this will lead to the start of a baseball league in Italy. It would be great fun to read on our local sports pages about the Padua Galileos, or the Palermo Mafiosos, or Rome Gladiators. An Italian league would complement our own major leagues because it could supply players in much the same way that Japan does now. And with the number of Italian American players who have been outstanding in the National and American Leagues, Italy could have its own Baseball Hall of Fame. It could be located in Rome right next to Vatican City to take advantage of its large number of tourists.

Surely globalization offers us unlimited expansion of our tourist base. All we have to do is put our minds to it.

the big issues

The three candidates for the board of trustees appear bright-eyed and eager to serve. I wish Mrs. Mebust, and Messrs. Hage and Feury well. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
