Get involved this weekend
It may fell more like late March or early April
lately, but the truth is it's almost time for
Cooperstown's annual Winter Carnival.
Carnival committee members have had to be a
little more creative this year while planning
events for Cooperstown's most anticipated winter
weekend.
That's because Mother Nature has taken much
of the winter away from this year's carnival,
which will begin Friday night with a fireworks
display over Otsego Lake and continue through
Sunday. There's not a lot of snow left on the
ground for making snow sculptures or sleigh
riding, although some snow is forecast for the
next few days.
"We are just hoping not to receive rain and
sleet like last Friday," said carnival co-chair Teri
Barown. "That would really put a damper on
things."
This year's 42nd winter carnival will be a far
cry from the past, when car races were held on
the frozen lake and snow sculptures lined Main
Street.
But there will still be plenty of events to interest
young and old alike, Barown said.
We've said it before in this space the Thursday
before the Winter Carnival, and we'll say it again
this year: Get involved. Pick and event or two and
have some family fun.
This year's theme is "Shiver Me Timbers," and
on Saturday at 10 a.m. a "Parade of Pirates" will
march down Main Street.
Then the activities start in earnest, with
everything from bowling and road races to eating
contests, the Chocolate Lovers' Festival, dog
shows, dances, live music and drink contests.
Cooperstown graduate and novelist Lauren
Groff will be signing copies of her first book "The
Monsters of Templeton" on Friday at Augur's
Bookstore. The book was inspired by people and
places in Cooperstown, Groff said recently, and
has received warm reviews.
