A look forward,
and a look back
This is the time of year when people traditionally
look toward the future and the coming New Year.
It is also a time to reflect on the year gone by, and
like most years, 2007 had its share of memorable
moments.
In July, Cooperstown was again in the national
spotlight when it hosted the annual Hall of Fame
Induction Ceremony. This year's induction included
baseball legends Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn,
and the 75,000 or so who traveled to the village
made Hall of Fame Weekend both memorable and
challenging.
There were a few fender benders, and a lot of
illegally parked vehicles were towed because buses
couldn't get around corners, but we'd have to agree
with Cooperstown Mayor Carol Waller, who said
afterward: "All-in-all, with 75,000 people, we did a
helluva job."
The idea of implementing paid parking on Main
and Pioneer Streets and in the Doubleday Field lot
stirred more controversy in the village than anything
in a long time. In the end, trustees decided there
would be paid parking the Doubleday Field parking
lot next summer during June, July and August.
On the local sports scene, Philip Pohl and the
Cooperstown baseball team were one of the biggest
stories of 2007. Pohl helped lead the Redskins to a
Section Three Class C title, and was named the
Class C player of the year after the conclusion of the
season. In July, Pohl, currently a senior, committed
to play baseball at Division One Clemson University
next year.
Now in our 14th year of operation, we'd like to
thank our readers for making us the place to turn to
each week for hometown news in northern Otsego
County, and wish you all a happy and healthy
2008.
