Roses & Raspberries
Roses to the Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Company for striving to keep its residents safe. The company has been selected to receive an Assistance to Firefighters Grant of $48,165. The grant will allow all Fly Creek residences to have the proper number of smoke alarms as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association. Residents will be provided with dual sensing alarms that detect both smoke and heat.
Members of the Fire Company and EMS squad have been working on the project since last January by conducting a door-to-door survey to show the need for fire prevention. The hard work paid off and the company is not stopping there with its effort to make its distinct more safe.
Jim Wolff, grant writer and fire police lieutenant, says the company will start another outreach program based on the theme ``Help Us Find You in an Emergency’’ when the next round of grants open up. He says members of the fire company and EMS squad will once again go door-to-door to establish the actual need of uniform reflective address/ house numbering signs for each of the unique 911 addresses in the fire district and will again submit a grant request.
Roses to Cooperstown Central High School student Alexandra Rheinhardt for being selected by the Board of Regents and the New York State Archives as the recipient of the 2007 Laura and Robert Chodos Award for Excellence in Student Research Using Historical Records, Grades 9-12. Her entry was called ``The AAGPBL: a Microcosm of Women during World War II’’ and she will be presented with a framed certificate and a cash gift at a luncheon ceremony at the State Education Department in Albany on Oct. 22. Her teacher, Mary Beth Murdock, will also be recognized at the luncheon.
Roses to the two Franks, Miosek and Spurchise, who are marking their 20th and 30th seasons, respectively, coaching boys soccer at Cooperstown and Milford this season.
The two have shared very similar careers. Both attended Oneonta State and both coached their sons during long and successful careers.
Spurchise said before this season began that this would be his last season at Milford both as a teacher and coach, but has left the door open for the return to coaching next season. And for good reason, he is enjoying unexpected success this season and his team is still alive for a league title heading to the last league game of the season on Friday.
Miosek retired from teaching last season but continued his coaching career. After losing many seniors from last year’s league champion team, many, including Miosek, thought this might be a rebuilding season.
But heading to last night’s game at Sauquoit, the Redskins were 13-1-1 and had already clinched a second straight Center State Conference crown.
Roses to Milford Central School senior Morgan Robinson for being named a Commended Student in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2008 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2008 competition by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
