Roses and raspberries

Roses and good luck to the ten Cooperstown Central School students who are in Washington D.C. this week to take part in the National History Day. Nearly 5,000 students from across will be there for this year’s competition whose theme is "Triumph and Tragedy in History." Tobi Voigt, the state History Day coordinator for New York, says the competition is a great way for kids to explore American and national history and helps them to develop research, writing and critical thinking skills that will help them in college and in life. We agree with Voigt and want to congratulate the students on their work that earned them a spot in the national competition.

Roses to Fly Creek’s Paula Huntsman, who last week was honored with the 2007 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction Award.

Her photograph and biography will be on display in a special public exhibit at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

Huntsman is Council Director of the Otsego County Girls on the Run, and has also served on Leatherstocking’s Promise and in the Cooperstown Lion’s Club.

Senator James Seward of Milford summed it up best when he said: ``I am proud to honor Paula Huntsman as a Woman of Distinction and prouder still of the recognition she has earned from her neighbors, colleagues and friends of her achievements on behalf of the community.’’

People like Huntsman, who volunteer their time and better the lives of others with little fanfare, often fly under the radar, and we’re glad to see the spotlight shine on her actions.

Roses to all area athletes and coaches on the completion of another great high school season.

In the Crier’s coverage area this season, the Milford girls soccer team and the Cooperstown baseball team both won sectional titles and advanced to play at the state level. On an individual level, Cooperstown’s Becky Fisher qualified for the state tournament in swimming, and Cooperstown’s Stephen Scrafford in cross crountry.

Friday night Cooperstown will hold its annual athletic banquet, and in addition to honoring athletes, it will be a chance to say goodbye to longtime boys track coach Don Howard, who is retiring from coaching this year. An award named for senior Chris Gentile, who died in a car accident in April, will also be given for the first time. The awards ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Roses to the Red, White and Blue. Today is Flag Day. The holiday commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States by the Second Continental Congress on this day in 1777. It is a day to honor the Stars and Stripes which have for more than 200 years flown as a symbol of this country and all it stands for. Fly the flag proudly.
