Roses and raspberrries

Roses to village residents, Marc and Sherrie Kingsley and the planning board for the manner in which they conducted themselves in the review of Kingsley’s proposal to change the R1-A zone east of Estli Avenue to allow Woodside Hall to be converted into an upscale hotel. Too often, those situations can become emotionally charged and deteriorate into personal attacks and innuendo. But happily, in this case, everyone involved acted in a very professional manner during the meetings and the public hearing. We also applaud the planning board’s decision which will help to preserve the residential character of the village.

Roses to Margaret Wolff and her fellow quilters for their thoughtful donation to area EMS Squads recently. Wolff, owner of Heartworks Quilts and Fabrics in Fly Creek, and the others spent many hours creating "rescue quilts" from materials donated by the store. The quilts were donated to EMS squads from Fly Creek, Milford, Cooperstown, Cherry Valley and Edmeston two weeks ago.

In the event of an emergency where children are involved, the quilts will be given to them to keep them warm and provide a measure of comfort.

Emergencies are trying times for everyone, but more so for children. We applaud Wolff and company’s efforts to soften the impact caused by a traumatic situation.

Roses to Cooperstown Youth Baseball for helping plan parent and coaching worksops along with the Positive Coaching Alliance this weekend.

The parent workshop is for any parent for any sport and will be held Saturday March 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cooperstown High School Auditorium.

The program will help parents get their children ready for sports competition, and help parents understand the role of coaches.

We feel this kind of workshop will help parents better understand coach’s decisions and the pressures they face when deciding playing time for team members.

There are also two coaching workshops planned on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

As anyone who has attended sporting events at any level can probably attest, the relationship between coaches and parents can be a tenuous one. We hope these workshops will not only teach children the value and merits of competition, but lead to better communication between parents and coaches.
