Get involved this weekend
It was only a month or so ago that we were wondering if winter was ever going to arrive this year.
Well it has, with a vengeance, and just in time for this weekend’s Winter Carnival in Cooperstown.
Usually, by this time of year we’re counting the days until spring, trying to remember what it feels like to venture outside without a coat and gloves. But this year has been a different story, with temperatures soaring and green grass until just a couple of weeks ago.
This year, instead of taking us out of our hibernation, the Winter Carnival will be a reminder of all the fun activities there are to do in the snow and cold.
We’re hoping that forecasts are correct, and it’s going to be snowy for the rest of the week and into the weekend. After all, what’s a winter carnival without a little snow?
So this weekend get out and sleigh ride, make a snow sculpture, ice skate and enjoy all winter related activities. Take in the fireworks show on Friday night, and if you tired of being outside there is always the cheesecake eating contest, wine tasting, karaoke contest and a myriad of sports events at the Clark Sports Center to participate in.
Quite simply, our advice is to get a schedule, pick an event and get involved.
This year, Cooperstown is celebrating its 41st annual Winter Carnival, and we agree with organizers that this weekend is all about community.
"Winter Carnival wouldn’t be what it is today without the advertising, sponsorships, in-kind donations, and hard work of many, many people behind the scenes,’’ said carnival committee co-chair Brad Feik. We’ve just seen an unbelievable amount of community support this year.’’
So let it snow this weekend, and on the bright side Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow four days ago, so spring will be here soon.
