Roses and Raspberries

Roses to the Hall of Fame for putting together another great induction celebration. By all reports, the weekend went very smoothly with only the regular annoyances that are to be expected with that many visitors in the village. Attendance at the Hall of Fame has been down this year and the weekend crowd, although somewhat smaller, was enough to please most business people.

The Hall was also able to announce next year's induction date, July 25, at this year's ceremony after meeting with major league baseball officials last week. The annual Hall of Fame Game will again be in June. Roses to Hall officials for getting an early decision so fans and business owners alike can start planning for next year.

Roses to Hartwick's Doug Geertgens, for taking home a gold and two bronze medals at the World Track and field Championships in Puerto Rico earlier this month. Geertgens, 60, helped the 4x100 relay team to a first place finish for his gold, the 4x400 relay team to a third place finish and an individual bronze in the 300 hurdles.

Geertgens said he tries to stay in shape, but goes to masters track meets more for the competition and meeting new people than winning. But to the surprise of even himself he has shown he's one of the best in the world in his age group.

Roses to Cherry Valley - Springfield junior Ashley Sikkema for her participation in the American Music Abroad's Silver tour which performed throughout Europe, visiting Switzerland, France, Germany and Austria.

She performed as the first chair solo clarinetist - the only band member chosen from New York.

Sikkema said she felt the trip was perfect for her because of her interest in pursuing either a teaching career in music or history. No one could ask for more from a student who is eager to take steps toward choosing a career at the age of sixteen.

Roses to the Otsego Lake Association for brokering an agreement which will see the return of both sheriff's lake patrols and no-wake zone buoys to Otsego Lake. The health of the lake and the safety of swimmers and boaters should not be compromised because of a lack of funding, and thanks to the OLA, now it won't be.
