Stepping up for progress

With the onset of the tourist season: hot, summer weather, busy streets and baseball, it only makes sense to get your walking shoes out and hit the pavement.

Resident's concerns over a supposed "lack of diversity" and "lack of parking" in the village seem to scream to local residents this time of year.

But while village committees look for diversity to add to the business district and search for more parking spaces for an overly-crowded village, why not put a little focus on a more healthy interim solution that might cheer up any tourist-season blues?

The answer is just a step away.

The Cooperstown Walking Example Group will celebrate its one year anniversary this Saturday, June 21.

As it just so happens, WE-GO was created in conjunction with the Cooperstown Business Advancement Committee to "foster diversity" and focus on resolving issues such as parking and obesity, according to WE-GO founder Brenda Berstler.

The Walking Example Group holds monthly walking tours with different themes to accommodate various interests as well as contests for walkers within and outside the area.

Berstler stated that the current membership enrollment in WE-GO is approximately 180. However, a lot of non-members participate in the numerous activities as well.

Festivities will begin at noon at Pioneer Park with a walking tour about the "History of Baseball," researched by Director of Research at the Baseball Hall of Fame, Timothy Wiles and delivered by Communications Director for the LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addictions and former Baseball Hall of Fame Librarian, Tom Heitz.

The afternoon will be filled with exhibits and presentations from Dr. Francis Fassett of the Heritage Veterinary Clinic discussing "walking with your dog," and Herbert Marx, research cardiologist with Bassett Hospital's Research Institute, who will present the importance of meditation while walking.

To conclude the afternoon, visitors at Brookwood Gardens will gather for gardening and wine, said President of the Cook Foundation Board of Directors and chief gardener, Pat Thorpe.

The process for WE-GO getting where it is today has been the accumulation of "1,000 little steps," Berstler said.

So, while the village continues its search for a resolution to the lack of parking and retail variety, why not take some healthy steps for yourself and join the Walking Example Group in their efforts for progress?
