Clancy has set positive example
The League of Women Voters of the Cooperstown Area announced this week that Brian Chancy will be this year's recipient of its annual Public Service Award. He will join an impressive list of past recipients who have generously given their time and energy to the community.
Clancy, the village's superintendent of public works, has been actively involved in the community throughout his life and is currently completing his third term on the Cooperstown Central School board of education. In his nine years on the board he has worked on all school board committees except curriculum and teacher negotiations.
Board of education president Kelly Brannigan nominated Clancy and pointed out that he has been a parent volunteer for over 10 years for school functions, field trips, PTO, dinners, and more.
"Whenever a volunteer is needed," she said, "Brian is there. He quietly steps in and willingly does whatever is needed, whenever it is needed. As a school board member, Brian strives to look at all sides of issues fairly and impartially. The only 'agenda' Brian has in mind is that of promoting ideas and programs that serve to better our schools."
Clancy's community service goes far beyond the school board. He has been a member of the Cooperstown Fire Department for 25 years and of the emergency squad for 10 years, and is a member of the fire department's Explorer's Youth Committee.
He has also served on Friends of the Parks, the Parks Board, and has served as chairman of Cooperstown's Winter Carnival. He is a member of the Lion's Club and the Elk's Club. He also coaches T-ball, and fall soccer.
He said this week that he grew up in a family that has a long history of community involvement and learned from the example set by his father, who spent many years as both a village and town official.
Just as he had a good example to follow, he is now setting an example of his own from which others can learn.
We congratulate Brian Clancy for being selected by the League of Women Voters and at the same time thank him for his community service which has made this village a better place to live.
He sets a high standard for others to match and is a tough act to follow.
