Everybody loves a winner
In case you've been living under a rock and haven't heard, the Cooperstown boys basketball team is heading to the state Final Four this weekend in Glens Falls.
After last Saturday's classic, 61-58 victory over a very talented Seton Catholic team, the Redskins are the one and only topic in town this week.
And will probably be for weeks to come as well.
For those with Redskin Fever, there will be plenty of chances to cheer the team on besides this weekend's games.
Residents can line the street and wish the team well as it heads for Glens Falls on Thursday at 11 a.m., complete with an escort from the Fire Department.
Regardless of the outcome of the games this weekend, there will be a parade at 3 p.m. on Sunday, beginning at the Farmers' Museum and continuing on to the school. Upon arriving at the school, the team will head to the gymnasium, where Cooperstown athletic director Mike Cring will take the microphone and congratulate the players on the season and thank the community for their support. Cooperstown head coach Dave Bertram and some players are expected to speak as well.
Cring said the community is invited and encouraged to attend the festivities at the school, which will begin at approximately 3:45 p.m. and also include some surprise events Cring and the school staff have planned for Coach Bertram and the team.
Sunday will cap what has become the most memorable season in a storied Cooperstown boys basketball program history. From legendary coach Dick White to players like Mike Nelson and Seth Schaeffer, who went on to play Division One basketball at Colgate, there have been many glory days over the years.
But nothing in the past can match what this team has accomplished this season. And best of all they have done it as a team, with different players contributing in different ways each night. There is no one star, and no star mentality - this team works for everything it gets.
"What you see in games is what you see in practice," Bertram said Tuesday. "We work hard every day in practice and it is very intense. When we leave the gym we're tired."
Cooperstown opponents get tired too. Tired of having every pass, every dribble, every shot contested. Nothing comes easy when you play Cooperstown, and more often than not, teams get frustrated by the Redskins style.
The only people not tired are the fans, who can't seem to get enough of this team and are expected to head to the Glens Falls Civic Center in droves this weekend. People are busy making plans to stay overnight, rescheduling weekend plans, anything they have to do to witness what they hope will be a state title.
"I can't walk 10 feet without somebody stopping me and wanting to talk about the team," Bertram said. "This is really something special."
