In These Otsego Hills
Since we moved back here
in 1982, we have noted the
deaths of a fair number of
long time Cooperstown area
residents. And each time a
long time resident is lost, we
silently lament the community's
loss of yet another tie
to its history.
With the recent passing of
long time Elm Street resident
Frances MacIntyre we
feel we have lost yet another
valuable connection with the
past. Frances worked for
many years as the secretary
for the Ob-Gyn Department
in the hospital. One of her
many jobs was to gather the
necessary information for
the birth certificate. We well
remember, when we were expecting
the wee-we, that we
had both a male and female
name picked out as we did
not want to be one of those
people who were not able to
supply the baby's name in a
timely fashion. We will never
forget Frances' irritation
with parents who sat around
nine months pregnant and
then acted like it was a complete
surprise. We were
ready. If it was a boy, it
would be Christopher. If it
was a girl it would be Caroline.
And the baby wasn't
even going to be born in Cooperstown.
But we wanted to
be ready, just in case. We always
admired Frances for
her unwavering interest in
the world around her. She always
wanted to stay connected
to what was going on. And
to that end, we understand
that one of her last undertakings
was to vote by absentee
ballot in the New York
State primary. We would not
have expected less of her. To
her family and friends, we
extend our sympathy.
We must admit that we
did not realize the response
we might get when we
weighted in on the newly established
CCS Athletic Hall
of Fame. As we suspected,
the problem with mentioning
a few possibilities for the
Hall, is that we didn't mention
all the possibilities for
the Hall. As a result we have
received several inquiries as
to why we did not mention
this coach, this athlete or
this team. We readily admit
that our goal was not to compile
a list of possibilities, but
rather to champion the cause
of Red Bursey. Therefore, we
hasten to point out that anyone
can make a nomination.
And the easiest way to acquire
a nomination form is to
go online to www.coopertowncs.
org and click, at the
top right, on "Athletics."
Then, after clicking on "Athletic
Hall of Fame," which is
in a list on the left, go to the
bottom of the file and click on
"Athletic Hall of Fame Form."
The form and the instructions
can then be printed.
We understand, of course,
that this will not work for
those without computer access.
And while the form is
available at the school, we
would also be most willing to
send a copy to anyone who is
not able to get to the school
to pick one up. We strongly
encourage anyone who would
like to make a nomination to
do so and thus are only too
happy to help out with the
process.
We recently found ourselves
in the position of having
to re-order checks, something
which we guess we
have not done in a while. In
the past we have found a
form along with the checks
which we could fill out and
take to the bank. However,
when we went searching for
such a form all we found was
a notice that we could order
checks by either calling an
800 number or accessing a
website online. We first tried
the 800 number only to be
told that we would have to
order the checks online which
we did. We were shocked,
however, to discover that
four boxes of checks, which
now only seemed to have 120
checks instead of the 200
checks of old, would cost $66
plus another $15.85 for delivery
and tax. That comes
out to slightly over 17 cents a
check.
And, to add insult to injury,
we also discovered that
each box ordered is shipped
separately. And, of course,
not all the boxes arrived in
the same mail delivery. We
got boxes 1, 3 and 4 together
but had to wait almost a
week for box 2 to be delivered.
Naturally we spent
much of the week wondering
if box 2 had fallen into the
wrong hands and would
prove even more problematic
than the $81.85 price of the
checks. None of this was
helped by the wee-we regaling
us with a story of someone
he knew whose box of
checks never arrived and
whose credit was ruined as
the checks were used by
someone. All in all, we found
ordering checking to be a less
pleasant experience than we
had anticipated.
Not long ago someone told
us that they had been told
that we were into hooking
rugs and wondered if we
could help with a stalled rug
hooking project. Alas, we
have never hooked a rug.
And everyone that we could
think of who hooked rugs,
Queenie Schultz, Bev Woolson
and Frances MacInytre
as well as our mother, is longer
with us. However, we
think there must be someone
who might be able to help
out. If you, or someone you
know, is a rug hooker and
would not mind sharing your
expertise, please let us know
so that one more of the
world's unfinished projects
can be finished.
In closing, we tend not to
make New Year's resolutions,
but 2008 has proven to
be the exception. For our
birthday we received a lovely
little 2008 date book which,
unfortunately, did not seem
to be big enough to actually
use and yet much too nice to
not use. This, of course, left
us in a quandary until we hit
upon what we think is an excellent
solution. We would
use the gift as a birthday
book in which we could write
down everyone's birthday. It
was, we thought, a perfect
solution, except for one little
thing. Because we have always
been awful at remembering
anyone's birthday, we
are unable to match very
many people with their actual
birth dates. The result
is a very empty birthday
book.
Consequently, should
anyone wish to become a part
of our newly established
birthday book we would
greatly appreciate a call or email
with all the pertinent
information. And, although
we may not have remembered
a birthday this year,
we will be able to in 2009,
providing we can keep track
of the book.
