In These Otsego Hills
We have long thought the
week between Christmas and
New Year’s is somewhat of a
lost week in the column writing
business. Everyone is busily
recuperating from the rigors
of Christmas and
contemplating if there is
enough energy left to do New
Year’s Eve up right. At least
that has always been our experience.
As a result, we suspect, although
we certainly don’t
know for certain, that taking
time to actually read the paper
may well be lost in the
shuffle. And that always
leaves us in a dilemma when
it comes to exactly what to
write for this seemingly lost
column.
After much thought, and
the realization that we really
didn’t have much lined up,
this year we have decided to
share a Christmas questionnaire
which we received via email
from the soon-to-be newest
member of the Ellsworth
family.
We suspect we shall try to
bestow the title of wee-she on
this upcoming family member,
although we hesitate to do so
as we have not received the
necessary permission for such
an undertaking.
Nonetheless, the questionnaire
along with our answers,
follows.
1. Wrapping paper or gift
bags?
Both ... we actually wrap
things and then stick them in
a gift bag. It is a rather over
the top approach which we
may have to abandon if not
wrapping presents, in an attempt
to be green, becomes
the vogue.
2. Real tree or Artificial?
Artificial...the real thing
makes us break out when we
touch it.
3. When do you put up the
tree?
Whenever we have the energy.
This year it was up, but
not decorated, way too early.
4. When do you take the
tree down?
Whenever we have the energy
although we are seriously
considering just leaving it up
year round. The energy savings
alone would be worth it.
5. Do you like eggnog?
Only if we don’t have to
drink it.
6. Favorite gift received as
a child?
Tiny tears doll ... we still
have it. We also have our sister’s
which we grabbed in a
cleaning out the parents’ house
coup.
7. Do you have a nativity
scene?
Several ... but they are on
display at the church this year
far away from the visiting
pooches who we feel could
make short work of any number
of the nativity participants.
8. Hardest person to buy
for?
Everyone ...
9. Easiest person to buy
for?
No one ...
10. Mail or e-mail Christmas
cards?
Mail ... e-mail doesn’t cut it
for me although we may have
to reassess our thinking on
this. Forty-one cents is a lot to
spend on some people.
11. Worst Christmas gift
you ever received?
It has to be the end tables
the whole family got one year.
They weren’t on our list.
12. Favorite Christmas
Movie?
“The Christmas Story,” although
Emmet Otter’s Jug-
Band Christmas is good too.
13. When do you start shopping
for Christmas?
We usually try to pick up
stuff throughout the year. Of
course, by the time Christmas
comes around we have forgotten
where and what it might
be.
14. Have you ever recycled
a Christmas gift?
Yes ... this year! The recipients
didn’t like it any better
than we did.
15. Favorite thing to eat at
Christmas?
This is a tough question as
we have never met a Christmas
food item we didn’t like.
16. Clear lights or colored
on the tree?
In Cooperstown, we have to
be into clear. It is a rule, we
believe.
17. Favorite Christmas
song?
Silent Night. In fact, we’ll
take silent anything.
18. Travel at Christmas or
stay home?
Stay home ... Does Christmas
really happen anywhere
but in Cooperstown?
19. Can you name all of
Santa’s reindeer?
The question is, can Santa
name all of his reindeer? But
we can tell you where the man
was sick in “The Night Before
Christmas.”
20. Angel on the tree top or
a star?
Neither ... we use a Santa
hat.
21. Open the presents
Christmas Eve or Morning?
Christmas morning would
be our choice although we
have done it wrong for many
years now since the Ellsworth
family believed in opening
presents on Christmas Eve.
Please don’t ask us why as we
don’t know. Fortunately, the
wee-she influence is moving
the gift opening to Christmas
morning.
22. Most annoying thing
about this time of year?
The weather ... it can make
it hard for people to travel.
23. Favorite ornament
theme or color?
We have to go with all the
ornaments the wee-we, who is
not so wee anymore and will
be married in 2008 to the weeshe,
should she accept the title,
made throughout the
years. We were quite horrified
when we discovered the dough
snowman lovingly crafted in
kindergarten, was broken
when we unpacked the ornaments
this year. Fortunately,
we have a hot melt glue gun.
24. What do you want for
Christmas this year?
Please, this is privileged information
known only to Santa
and a few of his subordinate
clauses.
In closing, we note that this
week concludes 24 years of
having written this column on
a weekly basis for one local paper
or another. Each year at
this time, we tend to think it is
time to hang up the pen as it
were. And yet, each time we
make that decision, we suddenly
realize how very much
we would miss this weekly opportunity
to share the events,
happenings, thoughts, opinions
and comings and goings
of our fair community.
Consequently, we will reup
for yet another year unless,
of course, the paper has other
ideas.
