In these Otsego hills
By The Ellsworths
We continue to receive names of C.C.S. alums who have taken on the job of keeping track of their classmates. In addition to Homer Osterhoudt, 1936, Donna-Gene Howe Francis, 1962, and Lynn Green, Jr., 1963, we now have Bob Lettis and Mae Atwood Robertson, 1943, Phyllis Murdock Selan, 1955 and Katie Tennant Sanford, 1965. If there are other keepers of the current lists of classmates, we would certainly appreciate knowing who they are. We also discovered, in talking with Bob Lettis, that the Class of 1943 is planning to hold their 60th reunion on Aug. 2. We wish them a successful reunion.
Recent visitors at the Ellsworth Pioneer Street home were the wee-we's in-laws, Jan and Len Lichtenstein, of Charleston, S.C. We had a most interesting visit with the Lichtensteins and greatly enjoyed the various activities undertaken during their stay.
We shopped, visited museums, dined and generally enjoyed exploring Cooperstown and its environs. We also managed a day trip to Saratoga Springs which was deemed successful even though we were unable to convince them to sample the various waters at the different springs.
We would like to thank both Dorothy Smith and Pat Donnelly for sharing with us copies of "The Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home - Its Evolution and History" by Joseph P. Vidosic, PhD. It is a delightful publication which is all the more meaningful now given the tragic fire which recently destroyed the home. And, having read the book, we were pleased to learn that the history we presented recently, courtesy of former Cooperstonian Bill Hermann, agrees with the history presented by Dr. Vidosic. Of course, the book is far more detailed and we found the pictures found to greatly enhance the historical experience. Anyone who wishes to learn more about the Thanksgiving Home would be well served by reading Dr. Vidosic's book. We thank both Dorothy and Pat for sharing the book with us.
For the past four years we have greatly enjoyed attending the annual Pops Concert at Hyde Hall. And we had planned to do so this year until we realized that it conflicted with a overnight camping trip on which we had been invited. And, since we had not been camping in years, even though we greatly enjoy it, we opted for the camping trip, only to discover that it would be to Glimmerglass State Park. We immediately knew that we might be able to salvage at least a part of the Pops Concert if we were at the State Park. And indeed we did.
While spending the afternoon at the beach, which was a very pleasant experience, we were treated to the rehearsal for the evening's performance. From the rehearsal, we could tell that the concert itself was going to be a most enjoyable experience. And, although we did not hear the actual concert, as we were busy at our camp site preparing and eating our dinner, we did manage to see, at the end of the concert, the fireworks which we greatly enjoyed.
And we were also most happy to be able to investigate the camping facilities at Glimmerglass. We have, of course, been day visitors on any number of occasions, but we had never stayed overnight. We found our primitive camp site to be quite delightful. It didn't even seem to be too buggy which we thought was either due to the bug away candle which was burned or to the fact that it was so chilly that the bugs were hiding somewhere. In fact, the only real drawback we encountered was with the facilities which were available within the primitive camping area. They needed serious help. Fortunately, we were able to travel to the beach area and use those facilities which were far more pleasant. All in all, we had a great time and were delighted to realize that we still enjoy camping.
In closing, we once again can not believe how quickly the summer is passing. We have but one more week of July and then August will no doubt fly by, leaving us facing the fall head on. And everyone knows what comes after the fall.
We remain,
In these Otsego hills,
Where nature smiles,
