Auxiliaries provide support
Several local volunteer firefighters choose to put their lives on the line for the sake of their community on a regular basis, but even the local heroes need a helping hand every now and then.

Students working with Safe Kids Coalition
Utica College students Jacquie Klotzbach and Tom Armitage traveled to Cooperstown Feb. 10 to promote seat belt safety at the Farmers' Market during the Winter Carnival. This was just one of several events UC students and the Otsego County Safe Kids Coalition planned for the Otsego County area for the month of February.

Forum promotes local food supply
ONEONTA - The future for our region may be a return to its past, said Jim Atwell, of Fly Creek, during the Farmers' Speak Out - a forum to discuss how to improve the supply and distribution of locally produced foods.

Organic garden planned for elementary school
Construction of an organic vegetable garden at the Cooperstown Elementary School is expected to begin next fall, after the completion of the Kid City reconstruction. According to organizers, Kid Garden is a cooperative endeavor of the Cooperstown Elementary School and community members interested in promoting healthy eating and teaching agricultural skills in the school system.

CCS plans inauguration trip
Next January, Cooperstown Central School 10ththrough 12th-graders will have an opportunity to not only learn about history, but experience history in the making.

Village wants its $100,000
In December, the Otsego County Board of Representatives agreed in principle to give Cooperstown $100,000 in bed tax money to help offset the cost of tourism, and last week the mayor and some trustees tried to collect.

Carnival basks in snowless cold
Despite the frigid weather and lack of snow, Winter Carnival Co-Chair Donna Borgstrom said she feels the weekend of festivities went well.

Members of the Cooperstown Christ Episcopal Church mission team shared their experience on a trip to the Dominican Republic at the church Sunday Feb. 3.

Earth Festival seeking supporters, participants
HARTWICK - Earth Festival organizers announced recently that letters seeking supporters and participants have been mailed to area businesses, schools, organizations, and individuals. Financial contributions are welcome, and an open invitation to earth-friendly exhibitors, food and retail vendors, and workshop presenters is being extended.

Board waits for Galati review
The village planning board held off beginning the review of a proposal from Joseph Galati to create a coordinated development district for a 15-unit single-family townhouse community - Linden Grove - to be constructed along Grove Street on the Leatherstocking Railway property.

Ratio of exempt property declines
Aside from the startling realization of what some property is now worth in Cooperstown, the biggest surprise may be the significant decline in the percentage of village property that is tax exempt. And that's good news for village taxpayers.

Bassett event focuses on women's heart health
It was like a night at the movies with Bassett employees gathered in Clark Auditorium with popcorn in hand for the hospital's fourth annual "Go Red for Women" program that was supposed to feature a video of an employee's life experience with heart disease.

2008 Fame Game will be the last
This year's contest between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres will be the last Hall of Fame Game - ending an almost 70-year tradition in Cooperstown.

Bassett to mark Red Day to promote heart month
February is Heart Health Month, and tomorrow will mark the fifth anniversary of National Wear Red Day, a way to support the fight against heart disease in women by wearing red.

Last year, the Cooperstown Central School 10th grade class was selected to be the first in the school district's 2010 "Greatness in Our Sites" initiative, to provide each graduating senior class with an electronic portfolio of exemplary works from their years of learning at CCS.

CV-S students are named to three All-County Choruses
A number of Cherry Valley- Springfield Central School choral students were recently accepted to All-County groups, including Emily Searles, Maggie Millner, Adeline Schneider, Catherine Fischer, Savannah Crowley, Sara Wilmot, Jonathan Graham, and Matthew Hazzard were accepted to All- County Senior Chorus. The students will perform on March 8 at Unatego High School.

Fly Creek upgrades its ambulance by 21 years
FLY CREEK - The Fly Creek Fire Company decided it is time to replace its 1977 ambulance with a newer model, and purchased a 1998 Horton ambulance from a Virginia- based emergency squad.

Cooperstown Ballet holds open house
The Cooperstown Ballet has moved from Brookwood School to 103 Main St. in Cooperstown. An open house was held on Jan. 15 so people could see the new studio and to register dancers for classes.

The board of trustees decided Friday morning to wait for a more specific recommendation from the planning board before moving ahead with rezoning the old railroad right-of-way.

Friends of Cooperstown Central School Music and Art (FOMA) will be holding its biggest fundraising event, the annual Cabaret Night, tomorrow night in the middle/ high school cafeteria from 5 to 9 p.m.

Development moratorium to be reworked
SPRINGFIELD - At Tuesday night's Springfield town board meeting, the board did not decide to adopt the moratorium the planning board has been working on, in hopes of slowing down town development before a comprehensive plan is created.

Winter Carnival has pirate theme
The seventh annual Carnival Fireworks display will start Winter Carnival weekend off with a boom at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8 at Lake Front Park, The "Parade of Pirates? will step off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, beginning from the intersection of Main Street and Railroad Avenue, and make its way down Main Street, ending in Cooper Park.

HARTWICK - Bill Powers has been an active member of one of the smallest cooperative insurance companies in New York State for over 50 years, and says he will not accept the presidency position again this year. The Otsego County Department of Health will offer a free rabies vaccination clinic at the Cooperstown SPCA on Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m.
