WinterFest is Saturday in Milford

By MICHELLE MILLER

Staff Writer

MILFORD - Despite the lack of snow and winter-like weather this year, it is time for WinterFest. The funfilled family event will take place Saturday inside and around Milford Central School.

The event will kick off at 8 a.m. with America's Greatest Heart Run & Walk. There will be three teams participating. The teams are CIA Team (Community in Action), captained by Kevin Stevens, FOTA Team (Friends of the Arts) captained by Jeanne Knowles and the Healthy Milford team, captained by Sabine Curry.

According to Curry, this is the second year the school has hosted a satellite location for America's Greatest Heart Run & Walk, and she hopes this year will be even more successful than last year.

"We were just shy of raising $4,000 with 38 walkers/ runners," said Curry.

Curry says anyone interested participating in the walk/run can contact her at 286-7721 ext. 8405. She says people can also register on the day of the event, as long as they get there before 8 a.m. to do so.

The walk is a great opportunity to get some exercise, win prizes and serve the community and school, says Curry.

More importantly, she says, it's a chance to raise money to support the American Heart Association's fight against heart disease, the nation's number one killer.

Curry says anyone who registers for the America's Greatest Heart Run & Walk at Milford is also automatically eligible to walk/run at the Utica Heart Walk that will be held at Utica College on March 8.

If not interested in running or walking, people can also donate to the cause. For more information, contact Curry.

Curry says once the walk/ run is over, the Milford Fire Department will have a breakfast prepared. The breakfast will be held in the school cafeteria from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Although the snow has not been as plentiful as organizers had hoped, there are numerous events scheduled for the entire family, including the young and young-atheart. The modified boys will take the court at 9 a.m. and afterwards, others can prove their own basketball ability in a foul shooting competition. Other sporting events scheduled include snowshoeing, snow kickball, indoor soccer and volleyball.

Volleyball team rosters must be in by noon Saturday so a tournament schedule can be created. Teams are cross-generational and must include at least one middle school student or younger, someone of high school age, an adult over 35 and one adult 35 or younger. New this year, teams must have both genders represented on the court at all times.

Organizers say they are still waiting for snow to create a frictionless surface for tubing. However, if there is not enough snow for tubing, there will be plenty of games and crafts to enjoy. The FOTA craft room will be open from noon to 1 p.m. The FOTA will also raffle off a special "Cook's Night In," which is a catered dinner party for eight people. See the FOTA for details.

People can come test their brain with Mr. Rathbone's famous versions of "Jeopardy" and "Milford Feud." A game room will also be available for the quiet thinkers who like puzzles, chess or checkers.

Come get your taste buds going and be a judge for the "Death-by-Chocolate" and "Chili Cook-Off" events. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. To participate in the cooking events, bring entries to the cafeteria by 10:45 a.m. All Entries must be clearly marked with a name and telephone number. Pre-registration is encouraged for the "Chili Cook Off" and "Death-by-Chocolate" events.

If the cooking events don't satisfy those taste buds, the Milford Rotary Club will be sponsoring a chicken BBQ from 11 a.m. to 2:30. Takeout will be available. There will also be goodies at the MCS Booster Club concession stand.

The festivities will conclude at 6 p.m. with the Polar Bear jumper's quest to raise money for local families by hosting a Chinese Auction. WinterFest 2008 events are as followed:
