Cooperstown Ballet holds open house

Staff Report

The Cooperstown Ballet has moved from Brookwood School to 103 Main St. in Cooperstown. An open house was held on Jan. 15 so people could see the new studio and to register dancers for classes.

``We had a really good turnout,’’ said owner Alma Curtis.

The Modern II class practiced their ``usual routine’’ during the open house while people watched so they could see what really goes on in the class, according to Curtis.

``We are all enjoying our studio space up on the third floor at Key Bank building,’’ said Curtis, ``There’s plenty of space up there andáit feels like being in a Manhattan loft.’’

Curtis says she is still taking registrations for classes, but the deadline is tomorrow (Friday).

Curtis says the dancers and instructors are getting ready for the annual recital at the Cooperstown high school, which will take place on June 14.

Curtis purchased the Cooperstown Ballet last July. She relocated from Poughkeepsie to Cooperstown with her family in March 2006, and said she has always had a passion for dance and the arts.

Originally from New York City, Curtis studied ballet and jazz from a very young age. However, she did not pursue dance as a career. Instead she received degrees in business and nursing.

Curtis said she has always kept dance in her life by taking classes herself and teaching Creative Movement for several years in the Hudson Valley area.

Curtis has two children, Scott and Kaitlin, who attend Cooperstown schools. Her husband, Dr. Matthew Curtis, runs a private optometry practice in Oneonta.
