Cooperstown boys, girls win key games
By ERIC AHLQVIST

Brad Ashford's steal and
lay-up with 30 seconds remaining
proved to be the difference
as the Cooperstown
boys basketball team held on
for a 50-48 win over Herkimer
in a Center State Conference
game at Bursey gymnasium
Tuesday night.
With the win, the Redskins
improved to 10-1 on the season,
and host Waterville tonight
before tough road games
at Richfield Saturday afternoon
and Mt. Markham on
Tuesday.
"This was a huge win for
us," said CCS head coach Dave
Bertram. "If we had let it slip
away it could have been devastating."
Cooperstown was seemingly
in control throughout, ending
the first quarter on a 10-0
run to take a 12-4 lead after
one quarter. They opened up a
20-9 lead on back-to-back baskets
by junior Ryan Davine,
and led 25-18 at the break.
After scoring the first four
points of the second half to
stretch the lead back to 11,
Herkimer began its comeback
when J.J. Crandall hit a threepoint
shot and added a steal
and lay-up. Again the Redskins
opened up a 12-point
lead when Luke Tirrell and
Eric Jederlinic scored on consecutive
possessions, but the
Magicians scored the final six
points of the quarter to cut the
lead to 40-34 heading to the
final period.
"They're a good team and I
knew it wouldn't be easy,"
Bertram said. "The first time
we played them we were up 21
points in the third quarter and
won by seven. It's always a
war when we play them."
Crandall started taking
control early in then fourth
quarter, scoring five of his
game-high 14 points to cut the
lead to 41-40 with five minutes
left. After two Jederlinic free
throws, Herkimer's Artie
Zhusma hit his second threepointer
of the night to tie the
score at 43-43 with three minutes
left.
After Cooperstown broke
Herkimer's press, Ashford
scored on a lay-up to put the
Redskins back ahead by two.
But Herkimer's Jon Kucerak
converted down low to tie it at
45 again. After a Cooperstown
turnover, the Magicians
missed two shots which would
have given them the lead, and
Jederlinic secured the last of
his 12 rebouds and was fouled.
He converted both free throws
with a minute and half left for
a 47-45 lead.
After a Herkimer timeout,
Ashford (10 points) stole the
in-bound pass and drove the
length of the court for a 49-45
Cooperstown lead. But Herkimer's
Paul Grubner answered
with a three-point shot
with 20 seconds left to cut the
lead to 49-48. Jederlinic converted
one of two free throws
with 19 seocnds left, and on
Herkimer's ensuing possession,
Tirrell knocked the ball
free and the Magicians never
got a shot off.
"We played good defense
and we rebounded well," Bertram
said. "We missed a lot of
easy lay-ups and made just
17-30 foul shots, that's what
got them back into the game."
