Longtime Hartwick town supervisor Mary Balcom was defeated in Tuesday’s election.
The race for Hartwick supervisor had been a heated one. Pat Ryan easily won the Democratic primary and bumped Mary Balcom from the party ballot line for Tuesday’s election. However, Balcom remained in the race because she also filed as an independent candidate.
Balcom was once again defeated by newcomer Pat Ryan Tuesday by a vote of 321 to 299.
Ryan said she was very pleased and can’t remember a time in the last 50 years when so many people came out to the polls to show their support.
``I am pleased people had a choice and they spoke,’’ said Ryan. `` People must have agreed we need a change and need to go in a different direction.’’
Ryan said she would like to congratulate Kenneth Hotaling Jr. and David Butler on their election as town councilman.
``I am looking forward to working with them to handle the many tasks that are before us,’’ Ryan said.
My talking about open government is what set me apart from my opponent, said Ryan.
Ryan said she plans to run an open board and is going to let people know the issues before the board on a real-time basis.
Four candidates ran for the position of town councilman. Republican Hotaling came out on top with 338 votes and Republican Butler in second with 333 votes. Democrat Lynn Green was not far behind in the race receiving 309 votes and Democrat/Independent Martha Clarvoe got 294 votes.
Current clerk/collector Regina Palmer ran unopposed and received 396 votes.
Incumbent Republican Cherry Valley Supervisor Tom Garretson said he was at the town barn with the rest of the candidates when he found out he had been re-elected for a second two-year term. He said once the results were in, each candidate shook hands and complimented one another.
Garretson defeated Linda Franzese by a margin of 293 to 189.
``That is how it should be,’’ said Garretson. ``It is good sportsmanship.’’
Garretson said he really does not know what set him apart from his opponent Linda Franzese, but is glad he has another two years to finish the projects he has already started. He said when he was elected for the position two years ago, he told himself he had to do what was right for the whole town and he believes he has.
``There has not been a single day I didn’t go home thinking I didn’t make the right calls even if they were not popular,’’ Garretson said.
At the end of the election, Garretson said he got the feeling people felt the same.
``More than anything I’m so proud of the town and the people that ran because everyone took the high road,’’ Garretson said.
Garretson said the voter turn out was as high as or higher than it has ever been.
``This means everyone was involved and that is what we need,’’ he said.
In the race for an open seat on the Cherry Valley town board, Mark Cornwell defeated Russell V. Flint 272-216.
For town clerk, incumbent Mary Beth Flint defeated Patricia Seybolt, 255-239.
