Trustees set vote on parking

The board of trustees held another special meeting Wednesday morning and again ended up debating the merits of different approaches to paid parking.

The board had intended to meet briefly to reaffirm a consensus reached a week ago over the resolution that will accompany the local law and establish how paid parking will be implemented next summer on Main and Pioneer Streets, and the Doubleday Field, Lake Street and Chestnut Street lots.

The resolution is very similar to an original proposal from the police committee and establishes parking fees, hours of operation, and a permit process.

Mayor Carol Waller again argued strenuously against being in too big a hurry.

``I don’t think we’ve studied the issue enough to make the decision we’re thinking about making,’’ she said. ``I’ve come full circle on this. We need to take a breather.’’

Trustee Milo Stewart, who favors starting paid parking in just the Doubleday Field lot, said, ``we haven’t thought this all the way through. There are a lot of things we haven’t investigated thoroughly.’’

``I think we’re being foolish. We should do it in Doubleday Field with two machines,’’ Waller said.

``That’s not what we agreed to last week,’’ Deputy Mayor Paul Kuhn replied.

``I think we should start with Doubleday Field. There is lower risk; lower impact. My preference is not to go beyond Doubleday Field this first year,’’ said trustee Eric Hage.

Waller expressed her concerns about the impact on Main Street businesses, particularly non-baseball oriented stores.

``Those concerns are why we limited the season,’’ said police committee member Lynne Mebust.

The board did not take another straw vote as it had last week, but decided to vote on the local law and resolution during its next meeting on November 19.

Copies of the local law and resolution are available from the village clerk.
