Committee: move field, DPW

The Village Gateway Technical committee now hopes to relocate Cooperstown Youth Baseball’s facility and the village DPW buildings out of the Linden Avenue extension area.

During a meeting Friday morning, the committee voted to recommend to the board of trustees that it approve a design concept that calls for moving the baseball complex and turning Linden Avenue into a thoroughfare that connects to Route 28. Peter Loyola, of CLA Site, the firm doing the site analysis and design work for the multi-million dollar project, commented that the design concept was a ``front runner’’ among residents during an informational meeting.

The design, he said, should go a long way toward reducing congestion on Linden Avenue by giving motorists a second way to go.

Mayor Carol Waller said she loved the design and wondered if it would be better to try and find a new home for the DPW buildings. If the buildings were going to be moved anyway, why not look for another piece of property for the DPW and create a ``clean slate,’’ she said.

The mayor said it would also be better if another home could be found for the baseball complex rather than just move it the south.

If both were moved, it would mean as many as 350 more parking spaces could be created.

Bassett Hospital Vice-President Joe Middleton, a member of the technical committee, said they could move forward with the design, and if property became available for Youth Baseball and/or the DPW, it could be treated as a change order.

Loyola said the buildings would not impede the thoroughfare in a first phase, but that a decision about the new location for Youth Baseball would have to be made because it is directly in line with the thoroughfare.

Trustee and committee member Jeff Katz said many people had recently asked him why Youth Baseball could not be relocated to the Clark Sports Center. The village, he said, can’t make that decision, but he wondered if it might be a possibility.

Middleton said he would contact the Clark Foundation to find out if there was a chance something could be worked out.

The committee’s recommendation was approved by the board of trustees during a special meeting Wednesday.
