New CCS Web site in the works

At the beginning of the school year, Cooperstown Central School Superintendent Mary Jo McPhail said people could expect to see a new district Web site early in the fall. However, Network Systems Coordinator Mark LaValley says the site is only 50 to 60 percent complete.
LaValley says it has taken a lot more time to put the site together than originally thought.
He said there are hundreds of pages to craft, and he wants to make sure the site is constructed to fit everyone’s needs before putting it on the web for public access.
``We want to do it right,’’ he said. ``We are trying to put something together that is appealing to everyone.’’
The core change will be the ability of staff members to add and post things on special sections of the site instead of having to go through a webmaster, according to LaValley. He says the school has purchased web service through School World, which has been collaborating with thousands of educators since 1989 to develop Web site management systems for classrooms, schools and districts.
LaValley says School World will allow for more interactivity and will save the school money because it will no longer have to pay a webmaster. He says there will still be a school employee who will oversee the site, but most of the information will be posted by several different staff members who will be responsible for their own portions of the site.
Training the staff responsible for their own areas of the site will also take some time, says LaValley, who says there is not a timeline set for the completion of the Web site.
In September, McPhail said the goal was to have the Web site more streamlined and user friendly while providing important information.
LaValley says he hopes the plans for the site will do just that. According to LaValley, the plan is to completely reformat the site and give it a new look. He also says more information will be added to the site and hopefully information will be able to be found more easily.
``It will be getting a general face lift,’’ said LaValley.
LaValley says the new site will also be more accessible to people who have disabilities and there will be new interactive features such as the ability to print lunch menus and the ability to post polls to get the public’s input. He also says the site will target a wider audience.
According to LaValley, the calendar will be put online electronically for people to access and documents will be converted into PDF formant and into Word documents so people can easily access them. LaValley also says the staff will be able to use the site more interactively by having access to things such as e-mail.
LaValley, who is also a co-advisor of the CCS Media Team, says he is excited about a news feature that will be offered. He says the Media Team will be providing audio and video clips in a special news section on the site that will act much like an online school newspaper.
Another interactive feature planned for the site is an online blog that will be written by the school’s superintendent, McPhail, in order to keep the public informed.
So far, LaValley says, the Web site is shaping up well.
