Donna Borgstrom, of the Cooperstown Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), said the group can never have too many volunteers.
The more people the PTO has, the better off the organization is because the responsibilities can be better spread out, said Borgstrom.
The Cooperstown PTO will have its first meeting of the 2007-2008 school year on Monday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria. PTO volunteers and school administrations will talk about the school and the PTO’s work to enhance the academic experience for every student.
Borgstrom said there are approximately 20 members that attend the meetings and about a couple hundred volunteers that help with the many projects the PTO is involved in throughout the year.
No projects have been planned so far for this year, according to Borgstrom. However, she said the year is young and things always come up.
Last year the PTO helped raise $5,000 for the Kids City Fund, which was set up to replace the elementary playground. Borgstrom said although the project is in the school budget for this year, the PTO promised to help with the funding to help cut the cost to the taxpayers.
The PTO also helped raise money for the sixth grade field trip to New York City to the Skyscraper Museum last year.
During the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend, the PTO sold items to raise money.
Borgstrom said the organization does quite a few fundraisers because they fund a lot of things such as field trips and special projects.
Some traditional events that the PTO participates in include, selling food at the Pumpkin Fest, conducting face paintings in December, holding a staff appreciation day in the spring, helping with the fifth grade graduation and eight grade graduation reception, and holding a holiday breakfast in December where kids can meet Santa.
Borgstrom says the biggest event the organization puts on is a Crayon Carnival at the middle/ high school in March. This event features inflatable play toys for the kids, games and food.
``We need a lot of volunteers to man booths and for preparations beforehand for this event,’’ Borgstrom said.
The PTO holds several book fairs throughout each year. The organization also gives books to the teachers and classrooms, Borgstrom said.
According to Borgstrom, anyone can help the PTO and can become a member. However, for voting privileges, one must sign in when coming to meetings.
Borgstrom said the PTO is always looking for people to help with activities such as field trips, fundraising, and helping out at the schools.
She said it is always nice to be involved with the school and to help out where help is needed.
``It helps keep everybody busy, but it’s a lot of fun,’’ Borgstrom said.
