NYSHA library stores Cooperstown's history

By MICHELLE MILLER

Staff writer

Ever wonder why Cooperstown became a well-known summer resort and vacation spot, or who Cooperstown's first woman mayor was? Or perhaps when Lakefront Park opened, or when Bassett Hospital was established? Most people know who founded Cooperstown, but may not know when or how.

There is over 200 years of history and much of it can be reminisced or learned by visiting the New York State Historical Association Research Library. The library opened an exhibit celebrating the bicentennial of the incorporation of the village on July 19 and the exhibit will be open to the public free of charge throughout the weeklong bicentennial celebration from Sept. 8-16.

" The exhibit seems to be becoming more popular," said assistant director of the NYSHA Research Library Wayne Wright. "People have been hearing about it and have been coming up from town."

The exhibit, "Cooperstown, 1807- 2007, in Images and Documents," features maps, historical photography, ephemera, county record and manuscripts drawn from the library's permanent collection that offer insight into Cooperstown's history.

The exhibit was dedicated to the library volunteers and made possible through the generosity of the Baird Foundation and the Hawn family. It includes maps of the village from 1811, 1853 and 1868, which illustrate changes in the village over time, such as differences in streets, street names, construction of and changes in the buildings, and locations of landmarks and historic sites.

The exhibit also contains historical photographs of Cooperstown from several vantage points, which enables people to visually compare the Cooperstown of the past to the one today. A highlight of the exhibit is a project created by the students of the Cooperstown Graduate Program called "Cooperstown Incorporated:

200 Years of Village Life." The project is a collection of images and historical information on Cooperstown for the years 1807, 1907 and 2007.

It is open to the public during regular library hours, which are Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The NYSHA Research Library is next to the Fenimore Art Museum.
