RICHFIELD_A bass tournament on Sunday at the Canadarago Boat Launch helped raise money for a new building for the Richfield Springs ``Zone’’ Community Center. The center is both a place for teenagers to hang out on Friday and Saturday nights, and a meeting place for area groups, said board member Bill Kosina.
Kosina said 22 boats and 48 anglers participated in the tournament, with the team of Joe and Pete LePage winning with a total weight of 10.60 pounds.
Teams were allowed to use the three largest fish they caught for the weigh-in.
The LePages also had the lunker, or heaviest single fish, weighing in at 4.31 pounds. Fishermen were allowed to use both large and smallmouth bass in the competition.
Jim Magie and Vic VanSteenburg were second at 9.87 pounds, and Bob Gray and Allan Green were third at 9.66 pounds.
``We were hoping for 20 boats, so we were happy with the turnout,’’ Kosina said. ``We definitely plan for this to be a yearly event.’’
Kosina added that a group of volunteers from Richfield are trying to raise $130,000 for a 40x80 square foot community center building on Ann Street in the village. So far, they have raised about $75,000 and work has just begun on the site, he said.
The ``Zone’’ has been in existence since 1999 and have rented space in the old feed mill on Lake Street. Kosina said the new building could host birthday parties, meetings for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other non-profit organizations, as well as give teens a place to go on Friday and Saturday nights. A variety of table top games and music is planned for the younger generation.
Kosina and other board members, as well as other volunteers in the community, also serve as mentors to Richfield youngsters.
``We try to guide them in the right direction,’’ he said.
Members of the ``Zone’’ will be hosting a two-day event, Richfield Pride Days, on July 28-29, Kosina said. Saturday’s events include amusement rides, village yard sales, the Utica Zoomobile, a parade at 5:30 p.m., an ice cream social at 6:30 p.m., and a band in the park from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Sunday, there will also be amusement rides, as well as a Chinese Auction, Brooks Bar-B-Que, an American Idol contest and a magic show.
``There should be something for everyone, and it should be a lot of fun,’’ said Kosina.
