The Farmers’ Museum will host the 60th annual Junior Livestock Show Sunday, July 15 through Tuesday, July 17, at Iroquois Farm on River Road (Route 33) outside Cooperstown.
Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.
Organizers said the Junior Livestock show celebrates youth and agriculture bringing together the area’s best livestock and youth exhibitors from an eight-county region.
The Farmers’ Museum Junior Livestock Show was established in 1948. The event tests the skills of participants ages eight to 18 who present animals (dairy cows, beef, swine, goats, and sheep of various breeds) that they own, care for, and have prepared for competition. More than 300 youth handlers and 750 animals are expected to participate.
Junior Livestock Show festivities will begin Sunday evening with a chicken barbecue by Miller’s Barbecue for the public and exhibitors at 5:30 p.m. The cost for the barbecue dinner is $7 per person.
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Junior Livestock Show, the museum will be hosting a "60s at the 60th show", a costume class for participants and alumni beginning at 7:15 p.m.
At 7:30 p.m., there will be an ice cream social, which is open to participants and the general public, free of charge.
On Monday, judging of animals and showmanship classes, which test the handler’s ability to present their fit and well-groomed animals in the way that best shows off their conformation, begins at 9:30 a.m.
At 6 p.m. the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health will award prizes for the 14th annual Farmsafe for Kidz Poster/Slogan Contest.
On Tuesday, judging will begin at 9 a.m. At 2:30 p.m., the grand champions in the dairy, beef, goat, sheep, and swine divisions will join the winners of the F. Ambrose Clark Livestock Trophy, The Farmers’ Museum Cup, and The Farmers’ Museum Dairy Goat Cup in a Parade of Champions.
An activity tent for visitors will be set up on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. where people can bring kids to do crafts, said Peterson.
The Junior Livestock Show is conducted in cooperation with Cornell Cooperative Extension, County 4-H Agents and Clubs throughout central New York. On-site services are provided by Leatherstocking Corporation, Cooperstown. Food services are provided by the American Legion of Cooperstown. The show is sponsored in part by NBT Bank, Wal-Mart, Screen Designs, Cabot Cheese, McCadam Cheese, NYCAMH and Brown Cow Ice Cream.
