Students help with party plans
By MICHELLE MILLER
Staff Writer
Cooperstown parents and
community members have
been volunteering their services
for 22 years in order to
provide Project Prom, an
adult-sponsored after-prom
party that includes entertainment
in a safe, drug and alcohol-
free environment.
Sandi Soraci, co-chairman
of Project Prom, said this year
the committee tried to cater to
the student's needs more and
the goal was to make the event
more student-driven. She said
the committee let the students
choose their theme and their
entertainment for this year's
festivities.
"It's about them," Soraci
said. "It's their night and it's
their entertainment."
The party will begin at the
Clarks Sports Center on June
16 at midnight after prom,
which will be held at the Country
Club, and will continue
into the morning until 5 a.m.
This year's theme will be "A
night on the Strip," which will
have the Clark Sports Center
gym transformed into Las Vegas
for a night. There will be
casino tables with roulette,
poker, and black jack. The
person with the most points
will get a gift. In fact, according
to Soraci, all attendees will
leave the party with a gift. Entertainment
will include a rat
race, a bungee run, jousting,
tattoos, caricatures, sumo
wrestling, and music playing
in the gym. Also, all the Clark
Sports Center facilities such
as the basketball courts, swimming
pool, and bowling lanes
are at their disposal.
"The gym is fantastic, they
give us full use of the gym,"
said Kathy Bell, co-chairman
of Project Prom.
One cannot have a party
without good food and beverages.
This year's event has
been changed from the past
and will feature a chocolate
fondue, an outdoor barbeque
and a Las Vegas themed nonalcoholic
smoothie bar instead
of the usual tropical bar.
Seniors and their parents
are required to go to a meeting
and sign a contract if they anticipate
going to the event.
Students must also be willing
to hand over their keys and if
they choose to leave the party,
the parents will be notified
and the students may not return
to the party.
Project Prom has been a
success since it began in 1984
following the death of a CCS
senior. Graduates' parents
raise thousands of dollars to
make the event successful,
and so far this year the fundraising
is still shy of the
$10,000 goal, according to
Soraci, who encourages the
public to contribute. Donations
can be sent to Nancy
Adikes, treasurer, at 1686
County Highway 14, Mount
Vision, N.Y. 13810.
"The bottom line is we try
to make it a good fun-filled
safe evening that the students
can enjoy," Soraci said.
