Middlefield Museum
seeks additional support
While Cooperstown remains
the focus of a wide variety
of cultural and historical
activities, just a few miles
away there is a hidden icon of
our upstate rural heritage -
the Town of Middlefield Old
Schoolhouse Museum.
Situated on the banks of
Cherry Valley Creek, the
schoolhouse, with its still
working school bell, was built
in 1875 and remained open
until 1954.
Operated by the Town of
Middlefield Historical Association
(TMHA) since 1966, the
two-story schoolhouse contains
a faithfully maintained
rural school room, a meeting
room, gift shop, and exhibits
depicting the history of both
the school and the surrounding
township of Middlefield. It
is listed on the National Register.
The Association is launching
a membership drive in
support of its mission to preserve
Middlefield's rural heritage.
Area residents are invited
to join, learn about its
history, and participate in special
programs. Even though
the township is carved up into
five zip codes and three school
districts, the historical association
continues to promote
Middlefield's identity.
Throughout the summer
and fall months, TMHA offers
a variety of programs, kicking
off with Middlefield Community
Day on July 8 and culminating
in October with a Fall
Festival & Craft Show. The
Museum is open to the public
on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
during the months of July and
August.
The Schoolhouse Museum
is located in the hamlet of
Middlefield on County Route
35, about six miles east of Cooperstown's
Main Street. Additional
information about the
Town of Middlefield Historical
Association is available at
www.middlefieldmuseum.org
or call (607) 547-9515.
