Midori to headline Chamber Music Festival
Celebrated violinist Midori opens the ninth
season of the Cooperstown Chamber Music
Festival on July 10.
Artistic director and festival founder Linda
Chesis will present a season spanning centuries
and bridging genres.
Festival artists include the Meridian Arts
Ensemble, the Chiara String Quartet, Charles
Abramovic and Simone Dinnerstein, pianos;
Hopkinson Smith, lute; Gil Morgenstern and
Judith Ingolfsson, violins; Linda Chesis, flute;
Kathryn Lockwood, viola; Inbal Segev and Edward
Arron, cellos; Amy Burton, soprano; Sara
Cutler, harp; Mark O'Connor's Appalachia
Waltz, and Trio da Paz.
Concerts will be held in intimate venues in
and around the village of Cooperstown, including
the stone barn at The Farmers' Museum,
historic churches, and a country mansion. The
Festival will also feature two Family Music
Fest concerts with the Meridian Arts Ensemble
and guitarist Rami Vamos.
Season highlights include:
- Gala Opening Night with Midori and
Charles Abramovic, July 10, 7:30 pm at The
Farmers' Museum, Cooperstown. Midori, one
of the world's leading violinists, and acclaimed
pianist Charles Abramovic perform works by
Brahms, Schumann, Bloch, and Schubert.
- Meridian Arts Ensemble, July 22, 7:30
pm at The Farmers' Museum, Cooperstown.
This high-octane brass and percussion ensemble
has been hailed for their "near symphonic
richness." Includes a beer tasting by Brewery
Ommegang for a memorable evening of Chops
and Hops.
- Chiara String Quartet, July 25, 7:30 pm
at First Presbyterian Church, Cooperstown.
Simone Dinnerstein, piano, and Linda Chesis,
flute, join this dynamic quartet in a concert
featuring Haydn Quartet Op. 20 No. 2 in C major,
Foote Night Piece and Scherzo, Shostakovich
Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57, and
Dvorak String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op.
96 (American). Ghosts in the Dream Machine,
a work by Gabriela Frank based on the paintings
of Simon Dinnerstein, will be offered in a
pre-concert performance at 7 pm.
- Music in the Drawing Room: Hopkinson
Smith, Aug. 1, 3 pm and 7:30 pm, Hyde Hall,
Springfield Center. Smith returns to the Festival
for two intimate performances of Renaissance
works by John Dowland and Francesco
da Milano in this country mansion overlooking
Otsego Lake.
- Sublime: Schubert and More, Aug. 5, 7:30
pm at Christ Episcopal Church, Cooperstown.
Gil Morgenstern, Judith Ingolfsson, Linda
Chesis, Inbal Segev, Kathryn Lockwood, Edward
Arron, and others in a program featuring
Schubert's masterpiece, the String Quintet in
C major, D. 956, and works by Devienne and
Corigliano.
- Soprano Amy Burton with the Chesis/
Cutler Duo, Aug. 12, 7:30 pm at Christ Episcopal
Church, Cooperstown. Soprano Amy Burton,
Linda Chesis, flute; and Sara Cutler, harp;
perform works by Ravel, Debussy, Saint-Saens,
and others.
- Simone Dinnerstein: JS Bach, The Goldberg
Variations, Aug. 15, 6 pm at The Otesaga
Resort Hotel, Cooperstown. With her Telarc
CD of The Goldberg Variations to be released
in August, this is a chance to hear a great performer
on the rise.
- Mark O'Connor's Appalachia Waltz, Aug.
17, 7:30 pm at The Farmers' Museum, Cooperstown.
Grammy-winner Mark O'Connor unites
bluegrass and classical music.
- Trio da Paz, Aug. 20, 6 pm and 8 pm, The
Farmers' Museum, Cooperstown (two sets).
Festival finale with the dazzling rhythms and
daring improvisations of this award-winning
Brazilian jazz trio.
The Festival will offer two daytime concerts
for families. Family Music Fest: Brass Class on
July 23 at 11 am features the Meridian Arts
Ensemble. This brass and drum ensemble will
perform classical works, Afro-Cuban dance
styles, and South American folk music. On
Aug. 8 at 11 am, Family Music Fest: Once Upon
a Time Signature features Rami Vamos is a
fun music lesson with puppets, singing, guitar
and more. Both family concerts will be held in
Templeton Hall. After each Family Music Fest
concert, children can try out a variety of instruments
at the Instrument Petting Zoo.
To reach out to new audiences and thank
the community, the Cooperstown Chamber
Music Festival will present a free concert at
the Otesaga Resort Hotel on Aug. 2 at 7 pm.
Tickets go on sale June 1. Tickets for the
Midori concert are $35 for adults; other evening
concerts are $30 for adults. Early bird and
subscription discounts available. Children's
tickets for evening concerts are $15. Daytime
Family Music Fest events are $15 per family.
