Voters reject CV-S budget, approve CCS, MCS
By CASEY CAMPBELL

Voters in the Cherry Valley-Springfield
school district defeated the proposed 2007-2008
school budget, while voters in the Cooperstown
and Milford school districts approved their
budgets by substantial margins.
The CV-S district called for a 2.9 percent increase
in the tax levy and was defeated by a
vote of 334 in favor to 361 against.
Earlier this year, district residents also rejected
a capital project proposed by the school.
Superintendent Nicholas Savin did not respond
to a message left requesting comment
Wednesday morning.
In an uncontested race for two seats on the
CV-S school board, Peter Freehafer received
470 votes and Paul Mendelsohn received 412.
The CCS budget called for a 2.4 percent tax
increase and passed by more than 200 votes,
receiving 553 in favor and 323 against.
A $7.2 million capital project proposal was
also accepted by Cooperstown voters, with 374
yes votes and 299 no votes. The project was a
scaled-back version of a $20 million project voters
defeated in 2005.
In a three-person race for two open seats on
the Cooperstown school board, Mary Leonard
and Paula Greene received 710 and 509 votes
respectively, while Matthew Tabor received
395 votes.
"It was a nice surprise," Leonard said
Wednesday morning about the results. "I’m excited
about the opportunity."
Leonard said she thinks people voted overwhelmingly
for her because of her experience
working at the school and working as smallbusiness
owner.
Greene said she was relieved to see the capital
project and budget both pass and gave
thanks to the district residents who voted.
"I’m appreciative of the community’s support,"
she said.
In Milford, the budget called for a 5.9 percent
tax levy increase and was approved by a
vote of 196 to 123.
In a close race for three open seats, incumbents
Paul Beisler and Susan Ward received
248 and 237 votes respectively while Kenneth
Stanford received 212 votes.
Richard Young was the odd man out, receiving
208 votes.
