Web group provides CV-S school info

CHERRY VALLEY _
School district residents looking
for more information about
board of education meetings
need look no further than their
personal computers and the
internet website Yahoo.com.
Found most easily by typing
"Cherry Valley Springfield"
in the search field at
groups.yahoo.com, the group
"CV-S" has been disseminating
information about the
school board since it was
formed in Oct. 2001 by Steve
Schneider.
Anyone with a free Yahoo
account can join and participate
in discussions about the
school or receive emails when
members post information.
"The Cherry Valley-Springfield
Central School District
discussion list is a forum for
those interested in the direction
and future of the school.
It is an open forum that welcomes
all views and perspectives,"
reads the group’s description.
Schneider, currently the
board vice president, said he
formed the group prior to joining
the board as a way to report
on the business meetings
to those who could not attend
for themselves.
"You shouldn’t need to come
to board meetings to know
what’s happening at the
school," Schneider said.
He called it the "CV-S Observer"
and began by emailing
meeting reports to interested
people.
When he joined the board
in 2003, he stopped sending
out the monthly newsletters
because he did not want people
to think he was speaking
for the board.
Schneider renewed use of
the group last year however,
as an organizing tool for members
of the Community Advisory
Council in their process
to develop a capital project for
the school.
Notice of upcoming meetings
were posted on the group
message board and emailed to
members, and summaries
went out after many of the
meetings.
District clerk Laura Carson
also sends copies of the business
meeting agenda to members
of the group.
"It’s a communications vehicle
for whomever is interested
in communicating things
about the board or the school
in general," Schneider said.
"Just another way for people
to find out what’s happening."
Darrin Lyons of Cherry
Valley, said he joined the
group because he did not have
time to serve on the CAC, but
wanted to keep up on what
was happening.
"I found it very useful and
stayed up to date with emails,"
he said. "But it’s only as informative
as the information
that’s posted."
