Scholarship winners announced

Staff Report

Jane Forbes Clark, President of the Clark Foundation, announced last week that the Board of Directors has approved first-year college scholarship grants to 204 students, totaling $742,000.

The Clark Foundation Scholarship Program includes 11 school districts and the Otsego Area Occupational Center- BOCES.

Clark said, "The Directors and I are pleased to recognize the accomplishments and potential of the students we are welcoming to the program. Past Clark Foundation Scholarship recipients have compiled outstanding records in their various college programs. We are pleased to assist these exceptional graduating seniors in their undergraduate studies."

Each year, the academic achievements of the top two students in Cooperstown are recognized with the prestigious Clark Scholar Award. Beginning this year, the Clark Foundation has expanded the Clark Scholar Award to recognize the top student in each of the other participating schools. The 11 Clark Scholars will receive a top award of $8,000 annually for four years of undergraduate study.

In addition to the normal selection criteria, candidates for the Clark Scholar Award must have attended three and a half years at their current high school. As in the past, selection for the program is based on academic record, citizenship qualities, the promise of successful accomplishment in higher education, and their service to community and school.

After an annual review, scholarship awards can be renewed throughout the student’s undergraduate career. Clark announced that approximately 700 students presently attending institutions of higher learning will be eligible for renewal of their Clark Foundation grants for the next academic year. The Foundation anticipates providing $4,000,000 in scholarships for the coming year.

Over 6,500 students have participated in the program since its inception in 1961. The Clark Foundation has awarded new scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year to the following students who are members of the Class of 2007 at their local high school:
