Hearings set on Doubleday Lot

Staff Report

The Cooperstown village board will hold two public hearings about Doubleday Parking Lot Monday night.

The first public hearing is scheduled for 8 p.m. and concerns an amendment making the six parking spaces in front of Metro Cleaners, Doubleday Dip and Baseball Nostalgia two-hour spots.

The issue was brought to the police committee by Helmut Michelitsch, owner of Metro Cleaners.

In a letter to the committee, Michelitsch said the spaces are historically filled early in the morning by downtown merchants or their employees, who remain parked there throughout the business day. This makes it difficult for Laundromat customers to easily access the business and creates a potential safety hazard, he wrote.

"Changing these spaces to a two-hour limit would greatly enhance customer access to these businesses and improve pedestrian safety by eliminating the need for Laundromat customers to carry heavy loads across traffic lanes," Michelitsch wrote.

Kuhn said after some discussion, the committee felt the change was reasonable and justifiable.

"Our unanimous feeling is this is something we would like to allow," he said.

The second public hearing is to amend the parking regulations to add a stop sign at the Main Street exit of the lot. That hearing is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m.
