Board names co-chairs

Staff Report

HARTWICK _ The Hartwick town board Monday night appointed Ferd Thering and Greg Horth co-chairmen of the town planning board.

Thering has served in the position for a number of years. Horth is new to the co-chairmanship and takes over for Ken Hotaling, who resigned from the planning board late last year.

The vacancy created by Hotaling’s resignation was filled by the board earlier when it appointed Alex Thomas to complete the unexpired term.

In other business Monday night, the board agreed to form a committee to look into the options for the lower Toddsville Bridge.

Town clerk Regina Palmer said the board told supporters of the bridge that the town did not want to spend money on it, but would form a committee to see what might possibly be done with it.

The county had intended to take the bridge down, but stopped when a number of area residents protested, saying it was of historic significance and should be repaired for use as part of a hiking trail.

Other residents, particularly those living near it, say the bridge is magnet for teenagers who play on and around it and have vandalized it in the past. They fear someone will get hurt if it is not torn down.

The bridge connects the towns of Hartwick and Otsego.

The committee consists of town board members Lynn A. Green and Delos Field and new planning board member Alex Thomas.
