Chamber is looking for rooms
Staff Report
The Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce is looking for more rooms for Induction Weekend.
Chamber director Polly Renckens said in a news release this week that the chamber has been inundated with calls the past year as the anticipation over the inductees has grown. "We have discussed several possibilities for easing the shortage and two have emerged. One is the use of dorm rooms in Oneonta and we are pleased that Hartwick College has made 100 rooms available. Many more are needed,’’ Renckens said.
The other possibility to meet the demand is a one-time, one fee chamber membership to the greater Cooperstown community.
The Chamber will be charging a fee of $40 per room, which will include an inspection, bed tax application, a picture and description on a special Induction Accommodation website and referrals from the chamber phone bank. The inspection criteria revolve around basic cleanliness, comfort and safety.
Inspection guidelines are available on line at cooperstownchamber.org under Induction 2007 or at the chamber office, 31 Chestnut St.
The individual property owners will establish prices. Currently prices per room per night are running $175 and up for rooms with two beds and private bath. Rooms with semi-private baths are somewhat lower.
The average length of stay being required is three days. Renting whole houses is also a possibility.
There is bed tax on all rentals and paperwork will be provided. The chamber’s research indicates that there is sales tax only on accommodations that are "regularly" used for rental so sales tax will not be an issue, Renckens said.
