New fire company members sign up

FLY CREEK - Fire district residents will have an opportunity to meet members of the new Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Company at the fire commissioner's meeting tonight.
Chairman Richard Carr said the new fire company's officers will be introduced to the community at the meeting, being held in the fire hall at 7 p.m. tonight.
"We're going to have a chief's report for the first time in a while," he said Tuesday afternoon.
He said the district is still busy getting things in order for the new fire company and that things are beginning to shape up.
"We're on a roll," Carr said. "We're getting to the point now where we have some good stuff to report."
So far, Carr said the company had between 25 and 30 members, including 10 first responders, three registered nurses and a physician's assistant. He said seven members of the new company underwent physicals Monday, as required by the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health. The rest of the company will have physicals in September, he said.
Currently the district is covered by the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Department while Fly Creek's new fire company is organized. The contract with Cooperstown ends December 31.
Carr said the district was also re-lettering its fire trucks and repainting the fire company sign to reflect the department's new name. The district abandoned the name "Fly Creek Volunteer Fire Department" when it severed ties with the embattled department, which many residents had lost fait in.
At tonight's meeting, Carr said the commissioners will address several financial issues, as they need to purchase a new computer, fax machine and other equipment necessary for the new fire company.
Carr said they were also looking to receive a $2,000 grant through New York state assemblyman Bill Magee's office. The grant would go toward the purchase of facemask radio communication equipment, so that firefighters don't have to hold a radio or take off their mask to communicate.
The district is also filling out paperwork so they can receive reimbursement through FEMA for money spent during the June flooding, although they do not have any what that amount might be, Carr said.
