Beach Boys take the stage tonight

There are still plenty of tickets for tonight's Beach Boys concert at Doubleday Field.

Appearing with the Beach Boys will be British invasion band Herman's Hermits with singer Peter Noone.

By midday Monday, the official tally of tickets sold stood at 2,823, far short of last year's sell out crowd for Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.

"It's not the quantity, it's the quality," village concert committee chairman Lee Malone said about the second annual summer concert.

Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce director Polly Renckens said she believes that last year's concert was a unique situation. It was the kick-off for a national tour, featured two headline acts and had a national advertising campaign.

"This year, we don't have that advantage," she said.

Another factor, Renckens said, is that the Beach Boys have been on tour for so long that there is not as much demand.

The Doubleday Field concert is not part of the Beach Boys national tour this summer, but the group was able to fit it in between other stops on the schedule, she said.

Last year's promoter, JAM Productions, did not inform the village until late April that it would not be handling the John Mellencamp/John Fogerty tour which left the village scrambling to find not only performers, but also a promoter.

At this point, she said, everyone would like to break even and move on from there.

Earlier, the break even point was selling 5,000 tickets, but with slow ticket sales, some expenses have been cut and 3,200 tickets is now the magic number.

Renckens said the requirements for security, for instance, will be much less with a smaller crowd so there was an opportunity to save some money there.

The state troopers will not be employed as part of the security force this year. Instead, the village police department will handle outside security and traffic control.

If concert promoters Ed and Judy Tripp can break even, Renckens said they can begin to look forward to next year. With more time for planning and a better selection of performers, Renckens said she believes they'll be "in the driver's seat."

Tickets will be available at the field Thursday morning beginning at 9 a.m.

Set up for the concert will begin Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., according to Doubleday Field groundskeeper Joe Harris. This year the stage may not be so deep in the outfield, but moved in closer to the grandstand area.

The concert committee was still looking Monday for some additional volunteer labor to help with the stage set up and tear down, but everything else appeared on track.

The boy scouts will be helping with clean up and will receive the returnable beverage bottles for their efforts.

Doors open for the general admission seating open at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and trolleys will be running late that evening. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m.

Additional information and rules for the concert are available on the chamber's website, www.cooperstownchamber.org.
