FLY CREEK - The New York State Comptroller's Office has agreed to perform an audit of the Fly Creek fire district.
District treasurer Betty Staffin said Monday that she had spoken with Mike Woniack from the comptroller's office in Binghamton, who told her they would look at the district's finances.
Staffin said the fire district board had voiced its approval of the idea of an audit during a previous meeting and that she had written to the state agency to make the request.
"Hopefully, the audit will put to rest any questions and I can start with a clean slate," she said.
Staffin took over as treasurer of the district following a special election earlier this year in which she won a landslide victory.
Comptroller's Office spokeswoman Jennifer Freeman confirmed Tuesday afternoon that they plan to conduct an audit of the fire district's financial operations.
Freeman said no date has been set for the start of the audit process which could stretch over several months before a report is finalized and released.
Fire district commissioner Mark Weir this week said he was aware the comptroller's office plans to audit the district.
"We voted unanimously at a meeting to have the audit and I support it," he said.
Fire district board chairwoman Patty Pernat did not respond to a request to be interviewed.
