Tickets for this summer's Beach Boys/Herman's Hermits concert will go on sale this Saturday and Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce director Polly Renckens is expecting a long line again this year.
Renckens said she has heard from a number of people who plan to be in line Saturday morning because they are fans of The Beach Boys or Herman's Mermits and don't want to risk missing out on tickets.
Renckens said that last year the chamber sold 6,000 tickets the first day with an even split between in-person and internet sales.
The concert is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11, on Doubleday Field.
Mike Love, one of the founders of the Beach Boys will appear with the current band members. Joining them will be opening act Herman's Hermits featuring Peter Noone.
These music legends are two of only a handful of artists that are capable of putting on a concert with only their hit songs. And while their hits are their stock in trade, the audience will also be treated to many other top songs of the 60s, 70s and 80s, according to concert promoters Ed and Judy Tripp.
Joining founding member and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mike Love will be Grammy-award winning songwriter Bruce Johnston, who joined the Beach Boys in 1965,on keyboards and vocals. Other band members include John Cowsill, keyboards and vocals, Mike Kowalski, drums, Adrian Baker, Guitar and vocals, Chris Farmer, bass and vocals, Tim Bonhomme, keyboards and vocals and Scott Totten, guitar and vocals.
The Beach Boys will be singing their hit recordings from "Surfin" recorded in 1961 to "Kokomo" one of their biggest hits that came 27 years later.
The Tripps said the opening act for the concert features Herman's Hermits with original recording star Peter Noone. After selling over 52 million records, 23 top 20 hits, the highest grossing act and biggest record sellers in the world for two years in a row, 1965 and 1966, Peter Noone is still going strong.
Some of the band's top hits are "There's A Kind of Hush All Over The World," "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter," "I'm Henry The VIII, I Am" and "Silhouettes."
This year, all ticket sales are being handled by the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce on Chestnut Street, which will open its doors at 8 a.m. Saturday morning. Special credit card and cash lines will be set up to accommodate those who want to be sure to get tickets on opening day. All tickets are general admission and will cost $45. Children under 10 are admitted free accompanied by an adult. Tickets may also be purchased on the internet at www.cooperstownchamber.org. Phone orders may be placed to the concert line at 547-2641; daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The concert is being presented by Ed and Judi Tripp who have produced jewelry shows all over this country and export trade shows for the U.S. Department of Congress in Japan and Hong Kong.
