It may be curtains for summer concert

Unless something surfaces in the next two weeks, it looks as though Cooperstown will have to wait until next year for another concert at Doubleday Field.

The village's concert committee met Monday afternoon to discuss where things stand now that it is certain John Mellencamp and John Fogerty will not be appearing here.

Trustee Lee Malone, who chairs the concert committee, told members she was disappointed in Jam Productions for not notifying the village sooner that they would not be promoting the concert tour.

The village had been waiting to hear from the promoter and would have started looking at other performers earlier if it had known, she said.

Other artists have been suggested, but Malone said she questioned their suitability for Cooperstown.

"I would rather pass this year than have a concert that was not appropriate," she said.

Chamber of Commerce director Polly Renckens, whose organization sold 8,000 concert tickets last year, said she had been looking for a promoter interested bringing a concert to Doubleday Field, but had not been successful so far.

Renckens said neither the chamber of commerce nor the village are willing to act as the promoter, but it may be possible to find someone who would be willing to underwrite the concert.

Even though it is getting late, one advantage this year is the experience gained from last year's concert which should make it easier to put everything in place for a concert, she said.

Luthier Tom Lieber, another committee member, said that if the village decided to put off a concert until next year, then the committee should begin looking for a promoter and performers now.

"Finding a band we can all agree on is not a problem. We need to find a promoter," he said.

Mayor Carol Waller said her criteria for selecting a concert would include making certain tickets would be sold locally, that they are affordable and that the fire department and local not-for-profits had an opportunity to make money again.

Committee member Bob Faller said that last year Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson and promoter Jam Productions wanted to kick off their tour of minor league baseball stadiums at Doubleday Field, but that this year that isn't the case.

Faller said it may be a little like looking for a needle in a haystack.

"There are only a handful of bands we can afford and only a handful of dates," he said,

Cooperstown still could be a wonderful venue for somebody, Lieber said.

Committee members concluded that they would wait a couple of weeks longer to see if the right performers and promoter can be found for the mid-August dates that are still set aside for a concert on Doubleday Field.

"I think it would be smart to wait until next year and get what we want," said Doubleday Field head groundskeeper Joe Harris, who is a member of the committee.
