CV-S grad to pedal from Alaska to Florida

While her friends and classmates are home enjoying their break from school or working a summer job for some extra cash, Diana Lane will be pedaling for a good cause, across the entire continent.
Lane, a graduate of Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School, is one of four cyclists whose goal is to raise $100,000 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation by biking from Cantwell, Ala. to Key West, Fla. from June 1 until Sept. 6.
Currently a Junior at the State University of New York at Geneseo studying English and sociology, Lane said she first heard about the trek on www.thefacebook.com, a college student networking website.
Because members of the site post their interests, the cyclist organizing the benefit, a student from Milwaukee, contacted Lane, asking her to be a part of the event and to try to spread the word to other cyclists.
"My response was: 'Wait. You're doing what?'," Lane said.
Lane said she had wanted to take a shorter bicycle trip this summer, but she grew excited as soon as she heard about the summer-long fundraiser. She said she has never taken a trip of this magnitude.
"The opportunity is here and the motivation is here," Lane said.
Lane said she has been cycling competitively for one year with the Gennessee Valley Cycling Club.
The cyclists decided to benefit cancer research because the event organizer has seen family members struggle with the disease, Lane said. She said it was only fitting that the money be given to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, because he, as a superstar cyclist battling cancer, is an inspiration to both cyclists and cancer victims.
Lane said she is dedicating her trek to a former English teacher of hers from Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School, Donna Theinpont, who died of leukemia in August 2003.
The cyclists have already set up an account with the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Those interested in making a donation may visit Lane's website at www.crazygirlonabike.com.
