CCS student headed to state competition

Katie Anania has helped put Cooperstown Central School on the map.

Anania, a seventh grader at CCS is the first student at CCS to make it to the National Geographic Bee state competition, which will be held tomorrow at the New York State Museum in Albany.

This is the third year that Anania has participated in the school geography bee, which is open to students in grades five through eight.

Though she has won the school competition in the past, this is the first year she has qualified for the state competition.

Winners at each school must complete a qualifying test to make it to the state finals. Only the top 100 test scores are invited to the competition.

Winners from the state competitions will go on to the national final in Washington D.C., which will be hosted by Jeopardy's Alex Trebek.

Anania frequently studies United States and World Geography by taking online quizzes at the Nation Geographic Bee website and by studying the world atlas and globe.

"She's always been an avid reader," said Anania's mother, Eileen Anania.

Anania, whose favorite subjects are history and social studies, said she participates in the world geography bees every year because she simply loves geography and traveling.

Only 13 years old, Anania has already visited Italy, Belize, Guatemala, Mexico, and Canada. She also plans to visit China this summer through a student ambassador program.

In addition to traveling abroad, Anania said she has traveled extensively across the U.S.

"I love geography," Anania said. "I love learning about the world history and other cultures."

Anania, who said she would like to study anthropology at the College of William and Mary, attributes her success in geography to her present social studies teacher, John Brotherton, her fifth grade teacher, Deborah Kiser and even her third grade teacher Jay More.
