Ballot fills up

By JIM AUSTIN

The village election ballot is taking shape.

Tuesday night, one of the largest Republican caucuses in recent years nominated two candidates for the upcoming March election when voters will choose two village trustees.

Both candidates are familiar faces in village government.

One is planning board chairman Paul Kuhn and the other is current trustee Madalyn Cimino whose term is up for election.

Cimino, a Democrat, had said earlier she had not intended to seek a second term on the board.

"After much consideration and after having announced that I would not seek another term, I realized, as a native daughter who cares very much about this village, that I cannot disengage myself from my involvement with the village. I have enjoyed my work and have worked very hard during my 3 year term, taken my responsibilities very seriously and made some important contributions," Cimino said Wednesday morning.

She said she had not been approached by the Democratic party about whether she wanted to seek another term and assumed they had other plans in mind.

'Consequently I announced that I would not seek another term," she explained. "When the Republican caucus recently asked if I would be willing to seek re-election to continue with my position on the board, it was difficult for me to say no because of my loyalty to the village. Party affiliation in this case has nothing to do with the important work we do for the Village."

Kuhn, who has been planning board chairman for the past five years, said believes he could bring a proven record of leadership and a new set talents to the board of trustees.

On Friday, a half dozen village Democrats held their caucus and nominated two candidates of their own for the village board.

One of the spots open on the board belongs to Milo Stewart, who was nominated at the caucus and is seeking a second three-year term.

Jeff Katz was nominated by the Democrats to run for the other seat, currently held by Cimino.

Stewart has been a member of the Friends of the Parks, the streets and buildings committee and is currently the chair of the parks board and the zebra mussel committee.

Katz, a self-employed stock and options trader, is a newcomer to village politics. He lives on Chestnut Street with his wife and three sons.
