Graffiti artist creates cityscape at facility

Staff Report

Grand Slam Paintball owner Mike Grampp is bringing a little "city" into this rural area.

With the help of artist Chris Pape, Grampp is creating a cityscape throughout his 10-acre paintball facility located on Route 28 in Hartwick Seminary

Grampp said he wanted to give residents something that normally isn't seen here.

Subway trains will be designed out of wood and hung from cables above the net surrounding the course. Advertising will be sold and painted throughout the paintball course to pay for a portion of the project, which has already begun.

"It looks great,' Grampp said. "[Pape] is one of the few graffiti artists left. He makes something come to life."

Pape said the creation of the cityscape would continue for years.

"It's an exciting thing," he said. "It's really fun."

Pape said he knew by the age of nine that he would become an artist. One example of Pape's work is a mural of a baseball card of Josh Gibson in a 12 ft. by 12 ft. handball court in Harlem.

However, Pape has spent 16 years of his life painting in abandoned subway tunnels in New York City. One of his works, which is now shown in the Museum of Modern Art, is a rendering of the Sistine Ceiling on an abandoned subway train.

His experiences were documented in Jennifer Toth's book "The Mole People: Life in the tunnels Beneath New York City."

Pape began his career by working for comic book company, Zoo York, when he was 14-years-old. Currently he is working on creating a comic book for them and was recently awarded $500 worth of paint by Zoo York for the project at Grand Slam Paintball.

Grampp said he will look for other artists to participate.
