Annual parade set for Monday

Staff Report

The second annual Hall of Fame Game Parade will be Monday, June 14.

The parade will feature 45 units with over a dozen antique cars, and five bands.

"It's a star spangled parade this year in honor of Flag Day," said Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce director Polly Renckens. "We are pleased and proud to have the US Army 10th Mountain Division Color Guard leading the parade. The Air National Guard Band of the Northeast will be the lead musical group. They will also be playing a selection of marches prior to the game in Doubleday Field and will play the National Anthem before the game."

One of the big hits from last year's parade is the Mummers from Philadelphia, who will be returning. The parade will conclude with members of the Minnesota Twins and Atlanta Braves riding on trolleys to Doubleday Field for the annual Hall of Fame Game.

"One of the signatures of the parade is the beautiful antique cars provided by some of our local residents and the North East Classic Car Museum in Norwich," Renckens said. "This year the Museum is supplying ten cars including a Pierce Arrow for Hall of Famers Harmon Killebrew and Phil Niekro as well as the antique calliope that was such a hit last year."

The parade begins at noon from the entry to Cooper Park on Main Street to Chestnut Street where it heads south to Susquehanna Avenue and out to the Clark Sports Center.

There will restrictions on parking for the parade day, according to village police chief Michael Crippen. The Doubleday field lot will be closed to parking throughout the day. Main Street, from the Susquehanna River bridge to Chestnut Street, and Fair Street from Cooper Park to Atwell Road, will be closed to parking. Elk and Church Streets will be closed to parking and traffic for the parade line-up, but will re-open following the parade. Parking will be prohibited the length of Susquehanna Avenue until after the parade. It will be closed to traffic from noon to 1 p.m. during the parade.

"We are very grateful to our sponsors for their generosity," said Renckens. "Without them we could not afford this level of excellence in a parade. We hope everyone will come out to enjoy the parade and salute our armed forces. We will be selling flags for a quarter at the kiosk with the proceeds to go to the Veterans Club."
