Three boards to hold joint meet

Staff Report

The village planning board will hold a joint meeting with the zoning board of appeals and the board of trustees to discuss a roposed revision to the zoning law.

The meeting will focus on room limits for tourist accomodations.

Earlier this year, the planning board recommended amending the law to remove the limit on the number of rooms a tourist accomodation may rent in favor of the maximum being set on a case by case basis according to the property's ability to meet standards set in the law.

The zoning board of appeals disagreed with the planning board, saying it believed there should be a maximum number of rooms set in the law.

Last month, the board of trustees failed to adopt the planning board's proposal and instead voted to put a four-room limit with a maximum of 12 guests into the law.

The zoning law calls for the planning board to compile a report to the board of trustees on any amendments to the law within 60 days and chairman Paul Kuhn told the trustees last week that he is preparing a document that will lay out the steps involved in applying for a special permit for a tourist accommodations so trustees may better understand the process. The document, he said, "will show you why we feel as strongly as we do that no maximum is needed."

The planning board has also asked village attorney John Lambert to review case law related to room limits to see what the courts have had to say about them.

Members of the three boards had discussed the possiblity of a joint meeting to try and work out their differences, but the Kuhn had opposed it saying it would be a waste of time.

Last week Kuhn said he would agree to the meeting that has been set for Monday, May 3, at 5 p.m. in the village meeting room.
