Students rest up for sleep-over

By KELLY BRUNI

Staff Writer

There will be plenty of tired parents recuperating this weekend after they volunteer at the 14th annual Cooperstown Central School Read-in Sleep-Over that will be held this Friday for first graders.

"It's a very fun time. It's something that we as teachers look forward to," said CCS first grade teacher Susan Bergene. "[Students] just love it."

The theme for the event will coincide with Parents As Reading Partner's "Reading is Magic" theme.

"It's a way of trying to make reading fun and exciting," said first grade teacher Kathy Chase. She said that students look forward to the event as they enter into first grade.

Students will participate in activities from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. including arts crafts and games. Elementary school principal Teresa Gorman will read to students and folk musician Skip West will perform.

"It's always been a huge success," said Chase. "It's really a lot of fun."

According to a press release, the hallway outside the first grade classrooms will be lined with magic hats that were designed by each student. Pictures will be taken of students with their hats for them to have as a keepsake.

Bergene said the students are now writing stories about sleepovers they have had whether it be with a grandparent, on vacation with family or at a friend's house.

These stories will be posted for parents to enjoy.

This Friday, first graders will come to school prepared to spend the night, with sleeping bag, stuffed animal, toothbrush and all.

"The room ends up very full," Bergene said.

After an evening of games and reading, most of the times, everyone falls asleep around 10:30 p.m. or 11 p.m., she said.

"We actually sleep," she said smiling.
