Write-ins will decide Milford village election

By KELLY BRUNI

Staff Writer

MILFORD - The only village election in the area with a contested race is in Milford-where no one's name is on the ballot.

No candidates were endorsed during the Democratic and Republican caucuses in January and no one submitted an independent nominating petition resulting in a ballot for the annual village election with no candidates.

But it now looks like three Milford residents will be running write-in campaigns for a vacant seat on the village board of trustees for the March 16 election.

Currently, Bob Zido and Michael Strong have shown interest in serving the village. Milford Mayor Sabine Curry stated that she had also heard interest from County Code Enforcement Officer Dave West. However, West could not be reached for comment by press time.

Zido, who has retired from the county as foreman, is now an electrical engineer for Zido Electric in Milford.

He moved to Milford a year ago and if elected, looks to focus his energy on the highway department.

"I want the streets to be taken care of," he commented.

Strong, who works for Agway Energy Products, expressed that he felt the main issues facing the village is the water system and the sidewalks.

He has lived in the village for 17 years and has served as a member of the fire department. Becoming a member of the village board was another way Strong felt he could get involved in the community.

The two-year trustee position, currently held by Kevin Stevens, has expired. He notified the village he would not be running, Curry said recently.

Stevens completed one year as trustee when he was appointed to finish Curry's term after she was elected mayor last year.

The person with the most write-ins wins the election, Curry stated.

"If nobody writes in a name, the village board can appoint someone for a year," said recently by Sheila Ross from the County Board of Elections.

Curry said the board preferred not to do that.

"I would like to see [people] get involved,' Curry said.

Ross explained that boards can also opt to leave the position vacant.

In the village of Milford with a board made up of only two trustees and a mayor, someone needs to fill the position to avoid voting ending in a tie, Curry said.
