FDNY to visit this weekend

By KELLY BRUNI

Staff Writer

Twenty-three New York Firemen and their families will return to play a charity baseball game at Doubleday Field against members of Cooperstown's Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.

A charity ball game was played last year after Noelle Hage and others at St. Mary's Church began to write letters to the FDNY to lend their support to the people involved in 9/11, said Hage. The letters of support snow-balled into a visit from the FDNY Firehouse, Ladder 165, Battalion 54, Engine 317.

This year, firefighters from other squads will join last years team, said Hage.

The firefighters will begin their full weekend on Friday by stopping at the Cooperstown Elementary School to speak at an assembly about fire safety.

FDNY will then join eight of Cooperstown's Volunteer Firemen at the Leatherstocking Golf Course at 1 p.m.

They have also been invited them to attend Cooperstown's Homecoming football game Friday night at 7 p.m.

Along with fire departments from Otsego County, FDNY will attend and participate in a ceremony in Richfield Springs Saturday at 11 a.m., celebrating the commemorative murals, one of them being "Tribute Towers" in remembrance of 9/11.

At 3 p.m. on Saturday, both fire departments will have use of the batting cages out side of Doubleday, courtesy of Nancy Angerer, to warm up for their game.

The charity ball game is scheduled to run from 4 to 6 p.m. at Doubleday Field. Admission is free. "We want everybody to go and support the fire departments," said Hage. A donation basket will be sent around the stadium for anyone who would like to contribute to the Widows and Children fund of 9/11.

On Sunday, FDNY and the Cooperstown Fire Department will arrive in full dress uniform to participate in an 11 a.m. mass at St. Mary's Church.

Following the mass, a reception will be held at St. Mary's Parish Hall. Refreshments will be available.

For additional information, contact Noelle and Eric Hage at 547-6062.
